I’ve been in the trade man and boy for old fashioned armchair decades. In the showrooms of Grosvenor, folk are not merely choosing somewhere to park themselves. I’ve seen families walk in, and they all ask for quality. A velvet seat with history, carries the room. I remember selling a Chesterfield to a gentleman from St John’s Wood, and ten years on it looked better than ever. That’s the Mayfair way. They waste time with flat-pack, but at the end they admit. Fabric frays fast, whereas real comfortable home furniture stays.
The capital’s rooms all look different. St John’s Wood desires quiet luxury, with velvet chairs. Camden stays chaotic, with retro mismatches. That’s what keeps us alive. Here’s the truth, an armchair becomes memory. You don’t get that from a catalogue. I still check the stitching for strength, and the real thing speaks. Retro has power. When a showroom tempts you, pause. Take on a classic wingback, and unique armchair make it part of your Mayfair truth.
