Moving into a student flat ain’t glamorous. The kitchen had a dodgy kettle, but we dragged in whatever we could find. No student can afford Mayfair prices, so we bartered with old dealers. We carried a wingback through Dalston. Everything mismatched, but that’s what gave it soul. Retro armchairs have weight, and we don’t need polish, we need real. I’ve hosted ten people on one sagging retro sofa, and the sofa was another character in the story.
Every warehouse flat tells the same story, and shops in the area thrive on it. We wandered past Smithers one Saturday, and everything felt alive, not plastic. we were broke students, but it’s become the throne of the house. We’ve all begged friends for lifts. it’s how you build a home. Accent chairs for living room leather don’t flinch when four people pile on. Brand-new looks boring, but vintage carries weight. every stain means another night. Looking back after twelve months, the cracked window gets forgotten, but the armchair stays in your mind.
So if you’re moving to London, ignore the fake polish. Make space for a classic seat, and make it part of your story.
