London’s Retro Revival: Why bedroom chair vintage Armchairs and Sofas Still Rule I can’t walk past a retro armchair without stopping for a look. The family armchair was covered in throws but still solid. The fabric was torn but held together, accent sofa but it carried memories. Back in the sixties, an armchair wasn’t just a seat. Families saved for months to buy one piece. It’s in the sag of the springs. I bartered for a sofa on Brick Lane one rainy morning.
It weren’t pretty at first glance, but the weight told me it was the real deal. Friends always fight to sit in it. London’s furniture scene splits by neighbourhood. Mayfair goes glossy, with grand accent chairs. Hackney keeps it raw, with funky retro chairs. The contrast keeps it alive. Mass-produced pieces fade in months. Armchairs with scars become part of your life. They’re not perfect, but neither are we. Truth be told, a battered sofa tells more truth than any showroom.
A sofa should tell your story. Next time you’re thinking of flat-pack, step into a dusty warehouse. Grab a vintage sofa, and watch it age alongside you.
