Furniture has been my bread and butter since the fifties. In the showrooms of Grosvenor, buying is about more than comfort. Young men with new flats, and they all want character. A retro armchair, gives them that. I remember selling a Chesterfield to a gentleman from St John’s Wood, and ten years on it looked better than ever. That’s what vintage means. They fall for fashion too quickly, but they find themselves in Mayfair again.
Gloss wears off, whereas real furniture stays. Taste splits by borough. Belgravia looks for tradition, with deep seats. Hackney raw, with loud unique armchairs. That’s the mix. End of the day, the right piece will define a home. Modern factory pieces can’t compete. I still check the stitching for strength, and the right piece never lies. Vintage has truth. Before you make a mistake, stop. Find yourself a vintage sofa, and watch it age gracefully.
