Furniture has been my bread and butter since the fifties. In the showrooms of Grosvenor, people don’t buy just to sit. Old families from Belgravia and armchairs vintage design Kensington, and they’re looking for furniture that will outlast them. A retro armchair, gives them that. There was a velvet sofa that went to a townhouse in Chelsea, and it carried his family through generations. That’s what vintage means. People wander past the big chains, but at the end they admit. Cheap wood snaps, whereas old chairs carry life.
Taste splits by borough. Hampstead seeks calm, with mahogany accent pieces. Camden stays chaotic, with upcycled seats. That’s the charm. I’ve learnt over years, site a sofa becomes family. Glossy showrooms don’t sell that. I still touch the arms of the chairs, and the difference is clear. Retro has power. Next time you flick through a catalogue, step back. Take on a classic wingback, and make it part of your Mayfair truth.
