I’ve spent a lifetime dealing in chairs and couch armchair sofas. In the heart of London, folk are not merely choosing somewhere to park themselves. Designers with clients in tow, and they’re all searching for the same thing. A funky accent chair, tells the truth. A wingback ended up in a Belgravia study, and the sofa aged but never gave way. That’s what endures. They look for convenience, but eventually they realise. Modern things break, whereas vintage lasts.
Furniture mirrors the postcode. Belgravia looks for tradition, with buttoned wingbacks. Dalston experimental, with upcycled seats. That’s the charm. I’ll tell you something else, customers never forget the chair that mattered. You don’t get that from a catalogue. I still check the stitching for strength, and the truth tells itself. Classic pieces endure. Next time you flick through a catalogue, think again.
Bring home something with story, and make it part of your Mayfair truth.
