From Markets to Mansions: London’s Love for retro style settees Vintage Sofas and affordable armchairs There’s something about vintage pieces that grabs me. The family armchair was covered in throws but still solid. It sagged in the middle and smelled faintly of tea, but it had heart. During the heyday of Soho, an armchair wasn’t just a seat. You’d hand down sofas from parents to kids. It’s in the sag of the springs. I rescued a battered armchair from outside a shop in Peckham.
It weren’t pretty at first glance, but the history spoke louder than the flaws. Friends always fight to sit in it. Each district carries its own vibe. Belgravia keeps it polished, with velvet armchairs. Camden loves the clash, chairs for living room leather with funky retro chairs. Every corner tells a different story. Modern flat-pack doesn’t hold a candle. Armchairs with scars get better with years. Every stain has a story. Truth be told, retro wins because it’s real.
Furniture should live with you. When you walk past a glossy showroom, take a look at what’s already lived. Save a battered seat, and let it shout London every time you sit.
