Moving into a student flat ain’t glamorous. The carpet smelled like beer, but we built it piece by piece. New furniture is soulless, unusual accent chairs so we begged, borrowed and carried. We carried a wingback through Dalston. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s what made it real. Retro statement armchairs have weight, classic armchair designs and students get that instinctively. I’ve watched half my flat pass out across two chairs, and those seats carried us. Shoreditch is perfect for this life, and shops in the area thrive on it.
One afternoon I stumbled into Smithers, and everything felt alive, not plastic. We couldn’t afford much, but it’s survived three house parties and a flood. We’ve all shoved sofas through windows. It’s part of student life. Vintage pieces survive it. Catalogue gloss falls apart fast, but vintage carries weight. every stain means another night. Looking back after twelve months, you don’t remember the kettle, but you remember the sofa. If you find yourself in a Shoreditch flat, leave the glossy showrooms behind.
Make space for a classic seat, and make it part of your story.
